Hoover Story

Hoover’s journey began with Murray Spangler, an industrious inventor who worked as a janitor by night.

Facing asthma-related challenges, he harnessed his creativity to address the dust that aggravated his condition while sweeping. By combining a tin soap box, a fan, a sateen pillowcase, and a broom handle, Spangler created a pioneering device he called a “suction sweeper.”

Recognizing the potential for commercial success, he sought financial backing to bring his invention to market. In 1908, W.H. “Boss” Hoover, owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop, purchased the patent from Spangler and invited him to join as a partner. Together, they started assembling six units a day in a corner of the shop, laying the foundation for future growth.
“Boss” Hoover initiated a clever marketing strategy by placing an advertisement in the Saturday Evening Post, offering ten days of free use of a Hoover suction sweeper to interested customers. Instead of sending products directly, he partnered with reputable stores in various cities, allowing customers to purchase from their local retailers. He incentivized store managers to retain any sales commissions and offered them the opportunity to become Hoover vacuum dealers. This initiative created a robust national dealer network, which remains a vital distribution channel for Hoover products today.
Meanwhile, Hoover’s engineers were developing innovative carpet-cleaning solutions. One of their most significant achievements was the introduction of the beater bar in 1926, which inspired the iconic slogan: “It beats, as it sweeps, as it cleans.” This innovation used strong suction and a gently tapping metal bar to loosen deep-seated dirt, while a bristle brush swept it away. The beater bar has evolved over the years and remains an essential feature in most Hoover vacuum cleaners today.
Additionally, they have introduced numerous groundbreaking features, including a disposable paper bag, vacuum cleaner headlights, self-propulsion, and side-mounted hose options—all designed to enhance the user experience.
